Description
When this bracelet came about in such a lovely deep shade of purple, we just knew it had to be named after Lydia. She was the first recorded convert in all of Europe and was mentioned twice in the book of Acts. She was known for selling purple fabric, which in those days was one of the most expensive colors of fabric. The dye was difficult to come by, and speaks in itself to the character of Lydia, that she would persevere to procure the ink and then dye her fabrics.
Purple dye in those days most often came from a particular type of snail. In the process of making the dye, these snails would be boiled for days in a particular kind of vat until the right shade of purple came about. The process smelled- really smelled. In that way, the story of Lydia is even more interesting because while she made this purple fabric, chances were really good that she also smelled of the product she was making. And yet, Paul and Silas CHOSE to remain with her for a time while in the area. The fact that they chose a kindred spirit over their own comforts speaks volumes to the love that Christians should have for one another.
The arrow charm on the Lydia bracelet also speaks to her character. She was straight and true and steadfast in making sure that her household was saved and baptized and was ready and willing to minister to the servants of God. May we all be straight and true and unwavering in sharing the love of Christ with those around us.
